20 miliardi di euro l’anno: i costi per il cancro in Italia – Prevenzione attiva, la vera arma vincente

The Cancer Driver Interception perfectly interprets the aims of the EIC Challenge Work Programme 2023, which are summarized in the following sentences: “There is a huge need to design novel and effective ways to predict, guide and monitor the progression of a disease in patients afflicted by refractory cancers” and “In addition, there is a clear need to develop comprehensive multimodality predictive tests that can help physicians guide the clinical management of potentially precancerous lesions” and “to develop novel predictive biomarker-based assays to identify who, among patients with potentially precancerous lesions, is more likely to develop cancer”. HELIXAFE is a disruptive technology that will shift the paradigm of cancer prevention from Cancer Early Detection to Cancer Driver Interception. The cancer driver conditions are genomic instability, chronic inflammation, intestinal dysbiosis, and intestinal bacterial flora (microbiome) imbalance.

Genomic instability is the primary driver because it is the consequence of the progressive accumulation of somatic (acquired) mutations in the DNA that occur when tumour suppressor genes interrupt their function of repairing the damage that the DNA itself undergoes. The DNA receives several thousand lesions daily that are repaired by tumor suppressor genes. Somatic mutations are progressively formed if these genes stop working and no longer repair the damage. BIOSCIENCE has patented the algorithm for detecting the progressive accumulation of somatic mutations that is an indicator of the inactivity of tumor suppressor genes. This is done by sequencing the circulating free DNA (cfDNA-Liquid Biopsy) obtained from a blood sample. The other driver conditions of the development of solid tumours that BIOSCIENCE analyzes are the level of systemic inflammation, the balance of the immune system, and the intestinal bacterial flora.
